Composing the Right Meta Keywords

Like meta description tags, meta keywords do not have much influence in how your page gets ranked in search engines. However, it should not be overlook when creating a page. Meta keywords tag is ideally a brief and concise list of the most significant themes of a page. The syntax of which is:
<meta name=”keywords” content=”keywords,keyword,keyword phrase,etc.”>
When writing your meta keywords list, begin by scanning the copy on your page. List the most significant terms of the page. Then go over your list. Choose the top 10 or 15 terms based on how well it describe the page content. If you have difficulty in trimming them down to 10 or 15, then the problem might be is that your page is not focus. Since you have a lot of competition in search engine environment, you should see to it that pages are focused on one or two particular keyword phrases. This is necessary for you to get a top rank in search engine results. Remember that your page should be focused, concise and has only one theme.
Meta Keywords and Search Engine Optimization
During the early years of Internet, meta keywords tag used to be very helpful for web pages to win on search engines. However, because of the numerous devious webmasters who abused the meta keywords, search engines developers have lessened the value of meta keywords. But this does not mean that you should not include meta keywords tag when creating your pages.
Meta Keywords Guidelines
- Limit your list of keywords or keyword phrases around 10 to 15 words or phrases.
- Separate words or phrases with comma. A space is not necessary when words are separated by commas.
- Do not be redundant. Do not use words or phrases repeatedly.
- Place your most important word or phrases at the forefront of your list.
The Other Side
There are many people that are against using meta keywords tag saying that it is not at all helpful in SEO. They cited that Google no longer uses it, however, Yahoo still uses meta keywords. According to this people, meta tags only benefit your competition as it provides them with a good list of your important keywords.
Conclusion
The importance of meta keywords will vary from one search engine to another. It will also vary in the changing valuations search engines put on these tags. But if you consider all search engines, then you might as well have a good meta keywords tag.
